Why upcycling is the new black

Josie Fitzhugh at co-writer does the copywriting for the Fraser Flat Tracker upcycling project launchThis week I worked with one of my favourite clients – Fraser Cars. They have been handcrafting Lotus 7 replica sports cars for over 20 years. You should see the workshop – it is a sweetshop for anyone who likes cars and / or for those of us who love watching people make things from scratch.

Anyway, this week co-writer helped Fraser launch their new Fraser Customs offering designed to tap into the creativity and craftsmanship held within the Fraser team. The service kicks off with the unveiling of their custom motorbike creation, the Fraser Flat Tracker. And the stunning bike will be shown in all its glory at the CRC Speedshow on 23&24 August 2011.

But behind the beautiful image is a really cool story. This bike has been made from an old unloved and broken Yamaha TW200. The Flat Tracker is an upcycling success story and a testament to the craftsmen at Fraser. Because they have reinvented this tatty old bike, building new parts by hand and finding new ways to avoid the scrapheap.

What is upcycling?

If you don’t know about upcycling – you will soon. According to Wikipedia upcycling is the process of converting waste materials or useless products into new materials or products of better quality or a higher environmental value. And I think this is an area that is going to be utterly huge.

It just makes perfect sense. Why throw out everything when some things can be re-invented? This is creativity and resource management beautifully combined.

Why Fraser upcycles?

Fraser Customs is all about taking a dream and making it real. And making it road-legal. It is aboutĀ appealingĀ to our desire to be different, to stand out from the crowd. The upcycling Flat Tracker project uses craftsmen to create new and exciting from old and unloved.

Scott and Ida Tristram own Fraser and they are very passionate about New Zealand manufacturing skills. Upcycling is proving to be an excellent way of flexing the creativity of the team whilst minimising waste.
