Thanks Josie for such a good comment. I could hardly believe my ears when I heard such petty claims from 12,000 miles away. What is more, Box Park is still on the plans and not up and running. Who would want the name 'Box Park' in our wonderful garden city?

I stood at the Bridge of Remembrance and looked down what was left of the city mall. Tears welled up as I thought of our service men who had given their lives to help Britain in Word War I and II. We lost more men per head of population that any other country.

The devastating February earthquake which claimed lives, injured people physically and mentally and we have coped with nearly 8000 quakes in a year and still they rumble through. The loss of historic buildings, churches, the loss of businesses and employment not to mention peoples' homes and land has really been an enormous task for us all to deal with. The loss of the familiar to us all - gone in seconds. The Government, Council, Earthquake Commission, churches, and many other groups have all got together to keep people hopeful. Many schools whose buildings were so unsafe or destroyed, had to share facilities across the city with other schools which meant hundreds of teachers, children and parents reorganizing their days, transport and of course the USAR teams from around the world and workers from various professions who came to support Christchurch.

Then, just when one is getting excited about some form of familiarity, albeit temporary, coming back into the City Mall, there comes a GRIM REAPER. I wonder if Roger Wade helped Christchurch in any positive way? Even Prince William came, saw and I believe donated some money.

Intellectual property rights! If you share information, you only own half of it. No, we don't want a pop-up mall, we have our own City Mall.
Containers are amazing for their various uses from prison cells, fantastic houses, storage (many on people's lawns at present, storage on farms, cafes, university extensions as in Germany.

Check out the history of Shoreditch from monasteries, gangs, prostitution and to the recovery it is trying to make today:

Thanks very much Martin. It will be interesting to see what the infringement actually covers. As you say the use of containers has been about for some time. I found some amazing pictures of Dekalb here http://nonabrooklyn.com/market-makers-valery-rizzo-snaps-downtown-brooklyns-dekalb-market/ It looks incredibly exciting!

Thanks for this well-balanced post. I know those responsible for the Cashel Mall Containers did visit Boxpark but it doesn't seem like the Christchurch project bears that much resemblance to Boxpark - in fact more resemblance to something like the Dekalb Market in the US (which has been up and running for some time now http://dekalbmarket.com/about/) The challenge over Boxpark seems ridiculous to me - if they're so concerned about giving credit where due then why doesn't Boxpark give a lot of credit to people who've been converting containers for retail use for decades... not to mention for other large-scale projects and housing since the 80s if not earlier.
